Surveillance system put in place
Saturday, June 14, 2008 8:36ISLAMABAD: The city district administration has put in place a state-of-the-art surveillance system at the Parade Square to monitor vehicles and people making up the lawyers’ long march due to reach the town today (Friday).
An official said that a control room had been formed at the 4th floor of the Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) building close to the Parade Avenue. He said that the room has all-time monitoring facility through manually operated cameras installed on all the important buildings around the long march route.
He said that the cameramen on rooftops were in all-time contact with control room following the instructions of those sitting in front of big TV screens in control room to identify suspicious vehicles or persons.
He said that all the recording of surveillance activity would be available in case of any untoward incident.
Advisor to Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik visited the control room along with high officials of the district administration.
He directed the chief commissioner to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to the control room so that surveillance did not affect. He asked the officials concerned to focus on water coolers and any kind of boxes with the participants of the long march.
Malik also issued directions for circulating through media at least two landline numbers for people if they wanted to share any information with concerned authorities regarding any suspicious activity during the rally.
Deputy Commissioner Amir Ali Ahmed said on the occasion that the district administration would not disrupt the rally, while the lawyers wouldn’t go violent under a bilateral understanding. He said that the participants of the rally would stay away from the constitution Avenue.
