Shirlene (Singapore) Launches Month of Photography Exhibit!

WANDERINGS – MONTH OF PHOTGRAPHY 2007Singapore, 28 May 2007 – Contemporary photography takes centre stage at this year’s Month of Photography on from 29 June to 30 July 2007 at City Hall and the Alliance Francaise de Singapour. Based on the theme of ‘Wanderings’, MOP 2007 presents four exhibitions; Retrospective by Martin Parr, Errance by Raymond Depardon, Objectif Paris and Out of Focus.  

The photographers in MOP 2007 are as diverse in their approaches to photography as the subject matters they capture. But what connects them to each other in MOP 2007 is that they have all wandered, whether to foreign lands, in their home countries or in a particular city, capturing their encounters, observations and experiences in their photographs. Some may have chosen to wander to far away places and some have chosen to stay closer to home. But it is not only geographical distance that is significant to wanderings. It is also the observation and discovery of not merely the different, the extraordinary or the fantastic, but the ordinary, the everyday and the mundane. Thus, while each of the exhibitions in MOP 2007 present a different style of and approach to photography, they show that these photographers have wandered into their subjects, whether these are people or places, and used photography to document their relationships with them. 

Martin Parr RetrospectiveRetrospective is an exhibition of over 200 works by Martin Parr, spanning his early career to the present. Parr, one of

Britain’s foremost contemporary photographer, has been taking photographs of ordinary things for thirty-five years. The dwindling congregation of a

Yorkshire chapel, home made jam at a village fete, school speech days, sitting rooms, dining tables, prize marrows and tea trays.  His search for ‘the ordinary’ has taken him to Las Vegas and Athens, Tokyo and the Gambia, to Ilford, Oregon and

Milton Keynes. Retrospective is a survey of his work from the early 1970s to 2000. Before coming to Singapore, the exhibition had travelled to the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Italy and

Korea. The exhibition is open from 6 to 29 July 2007 at City Hall.

 Errance by Raymond DepardonErrance is an exhibition of 81 works by French photographer and documentary filmmaker, Ray

mond Depardon. A largely self-taught photographer who learned through experience in the field, Depardon belongs to a generation of French photographers reluctant to over interpret their subjects as is evidenced in Errance, or Wandering in English. It is for Depardon, as much a quest for that special place, the intermediary zone, as it is a search for himself as a photographer. The photographs that make up this exhibition cannot be seen as only landscapes but a certain questioning of Depardon himself, his work, his relationship with his subject. The exhibition is open from 30 June to 30 July 2007 at SG Private Banking Gallery, Alliance Française de Singapour.

 Objectif ParisObjectif Paris is an exhibition of over 80 photographs which have been chosen from among the municipal collections of Paris; Musée Carnavalet, Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Bibliotheque historique de la Ville de Paris, Maison europeenne de la photographie, Fonds municipal d’art contemporain. The exhibition invites us to go in search of the “elusive

Paris”. Through the magnificent visual journey of this exhibition, it can be found at once, the high moments of history and the simplicity of common life, the “great portraits” of the capital as well as its metamorphoses. Objectif Paris chronicles

Paris over a span of a century through the lens of 39 photographers ranging from Brassai, Eugene Atget, Cartier-Bresson to Martine Franck and William Klein. The exhibition is open to the public from 6 to 29 July 2007 at City Hall.

 Out of FocusOut of Focus is an exhibition component of MOP that serves as a platform to showcase new photography talents in

Singapore. Curated by Singaporean photographer and curator, Tay Kay Chin. Out of Focus aims to bring into focus photographers who have not been exposed to the

Singapore public. The exhibition this year features the work of three photographers with interests in differing subject matters. A publication of their work is also available for sale. Out of Focus is on at the City Hall from 6 to 29 July.

 Wanderings, as a theme for the Month of Photography, is as much a guiding idea for the photography and the photographs chosen for exhibition as it is the way we hope audiences would approach them. Audiences are invited to wander into the pictures to seek out their own experiences from them. Wanderings – MOP 2007 hopes to remind us that we are all wanderers in our own way, whether we are photographers or not, whether we are travelers or not - we are all capable of wandering even if we do not go anywhere. 

Exhibitions and events of Wanderings –MOP 2007 are held at City Hall, Alliance Française de Singapour, the Arts House and

School of

Arts, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological Unviersity (NTU). All exhibitions at City Hall are on from 6 to 29 July from Monday to Sunday, 11am to 8pm. Exhibition at Alliance Française de Singapour is on from 30 June to 30 July from Monday to Saturday, 11am to 8pm. Admission to all exhibitions is free.
