PTCL, CISCO, NUST to establish internet technology centre

ISLAMABAD: PTCL, NUST and CISCO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday for establishing a centre of excellence for internet technologies at NUST, Islamabad. On this occasion, Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Atta Ur Rehman said that there was not a single research and development (R&D) center in the country and there was a need to change this trend. Boy what a week this has been! Everything but the kitchen sink and lota seemed to be getting thrown at the local sector! Companies in the Evacuee Trust Complex in Islamabad received eviction notices the board, which asked all companies to clear the premises within seven days. The notice, which was sent on 23rd of May, was received by all the companies on the 27th of May, when all hell unleashed in Islamabad.
IT sector discouraged this act and called it illegal. The building had been officially designated as an IT Park in 2001. P@SHA and other companies arranged meetings with government secretariat but the problem has not resolved itself yet.
The Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology was informed that the Ministry of Science and Technology would get a share of 3,015 million rupees for 146 projects that have been planned for the year 2008-09. This was announced at a presentation given by the ministry at committee meeting held with Chairman Rozina Alam Khan. [Read more]

Some 35 IT companies with almost 2000 employees have been asked to vacate the IT Park Islamabad. The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) issued a notice on 23rd of May. The companies were asked to leave the building in seven days, which was supposed to be 31st of May. However, no action has been taken until now, but this situation has created a completely new situation for the rapidly growing IT industry. [Read more]

WEF’s Global IT Report ranks Pakistan 89 among 127 countries

The World Economic Forum (WEF) released the “WEF Global Information Technology Report 2007-2008,” ranking Pakistan 89 out of 127 countries in terms of nations’ preparedness to effectively promote business, improve investment climate and develop infrastructure.
This year’s ranking shows a five-point decline for Pakistan from last year when it was ranked 84 out of 122 countries, according to the Competitiveness Support Fund (CSF), partner institute of the WEF in Pakistan. [Read more]

Today is the age of self-promotion. There is nobody that knows you, your product or your market better than you. So what stops you from just picking up a camera and driving the point home? If it was any other time and place, I’d say “everything hinders online publishing.” Today, I say “there is no excuse for not having your face and voice splashed everywhere online.” It is all possible.
Television. Radio. Print. Outdoor. These have been the usual, conventional media avenues that you have at your disposal. And these are also, as a friend of mine would argue, the most effective. But their effectiveness has been measured simply because they have been the only avenues around and have developed audience trends around their offerings.
But we’ve already entered into the age of Web2.0. The age of buzzwords such as ‘interactivity’, ‘push marketing’ and of course, ‘convergence’. Today is that day for collaboration, and collaboration not just from the citizen or even the service provider – but collaboration of content and planning and marketing budgets in addition to all the other levels and challenges that a media campaign has attached to it. ITA, Cisco in pact for wireless technology in schools

This was announced yesterday in an event attended by Dr Salim bin Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA Oman; Samer Alkharrat, managing director of Cisco Gulf & Pakistan; and Wayne Hull, general manager for Cisco South Gulf at Knowledge Oasis Muscat.
As part of this agreement, select schools in the Sultanate will be empowered with the latest in wireless technology as well as ICT training programmes to further promote connected education. This will create new opportunities to improve the learning experience and prepare students to meet the challenges of a knowledge-based society.
Cisco will be sharing its Connected Government expertise in citizen centricity, standard common infrastructure, back-office reorganisation governance, new organisation models and social inclusion to develop a technical blueprint for eOman. [Read more]
