What’s up with Dawn’s updates? They’re not there!

July 7, 2008

Dawn, Pakistan’s leading English newspaper for national and international news, seems to be going through some ummm… difficulties in updating its website as quickly as its competition in the market. In the midst of the 5 suicide bomb blasts rocking Karachi, it is 10pm and almost 3 hours until after the incident, there is no mention or update on the Dawn website. That’s really not how you’re going to make the most out of staying on top, is it? People look to you for updated news and current events, moreso online now than print.. They’re going to be in big trouble if they don’t get their act together fast.

Also, I thought I’d give them the benefit of the doubt and search for “Dawn News” in a search engine. The link “latest news” leads to a November 3rd, 2007 Musharraf’s Declaration for the State of Emergency in Pakistan.. Certainly something we can understand that we all need reminding about, but not necessarily latest.. unless we’re STILL in the state of chaos….

Maybe my internet connection was just re-routing it (since they are more biased towards Express News - Pakistan’s first and BEST channel…NOT!), but type in dawnnews.tv and you get re-routed back to dawn.com - Anyone else having the same problem?

Media for the People: This Week in e-Pakistan

March 7, 2008

It seems like an age ago when the burgeoning reach of the Pakistani media seemed like a distant dream; but now, with access to more TV channels and Radio channels than you can shake your remote at; it has become an obvious reality. It is within this reality, that the Pakistan media has begun to find its feet and evolve itself into a position of further strength by looking to eventually gain the ability to be trusted in terms of the information that it internally communicate to us, and to also be able to externally brand Pakistan. It’s Video and It’s Online!

March 7, 2008

reel-copy.jpgToday is the age of self-promotion. There is nobody that knows you, your product or your market better than you. So what stops you from just picking up a camera and driving the point home? If it was any other time and place, I’d say “everything hinders online publishing.” Today, I say “there is no excuse for not having your face and voice splashed everywhere online.” It is all possible.

Television. Radio. Print. Outdoor. These have been the usual, conventional media avenues that you have at your disposal. And these are also, as a friend of mine would argue, the most effective. But their effectiveness has been measured simply because they have been the only avenues around and have developed audience trends around their offerings.

But we’ve already entered into the age of Web2.0. The age of buzzwords such as ‘interactivity’, ‘push marketing’ and of course, ‘convergence’. Today is that day for collaboration, and collaboration not just from the citizen or even the service provider – but collaboration of content and planning and marketing budgets in addition to all the other levels and challenges that a media campaign has attached to it. Adding the e into Elections:Umair Naeem

February 24, 2008

Finally, the much awaited Elections have come and gone. Fortunately for Pakistan, they went by without any major incident, although the political aftermath is something that we shall continue to face for a while. But leaving aside the political repercussions, elections are always an event that is driven by numbers; both pre and post polls. [Read more]

Virally Gunning for your Attention: Umair Naeem

February 1, 2008

There is a huge battle going on for gaining the attention of consumers, especially when there is so much clutter around and with so many ‘brands’ harping their bandwagons. Within this scenario, a little thing called Viral Marketing can come in handy and be converged into that thing marketers like to call as ‘360 degree’ communication. Now before all of you switch off and start wondering what I am on about, here’s a quick refresher on what I’m referring to.360 degree communication refers to an integrative marketing/communication campaign that uses many touch points originating from different media to deliver a consistent message to the consumer regarding the particular Brand. And in today’s world, everything is branded; from products that we use, to countries, states, governments and even news or propaganda (or people running in elections).

And the battle that I referred to in the beginning is not just going on in the developed world, it’s part and parcel of the e-Pakistan that you and I are a part of. This is where Viral Marketing comes in and can be hugely exploited in Pakistan. The said term can be best explained if you think about how Word of Mouth can cause news to travel, or how it can be the major reason why a Brand is successful. Now think of a virtual ‘e-Word of Mouth’ that replicates and spreads using various Internet social networks, blogs or popular websites. That is Viral Marketing, and it can be made a huge part of a 360 degree campaign. [Read more]

Through the Looking Glass

January 5, 2008

by Umair Naeem

It’s been a bit now since 2008 started, and thankfully it has been on the quiet side following the very unfortunate end to 2007. Much has been said and talked about the events that took place, and the fallout continues to dominate news.

It would be appropriate here to talk about two vital mediums of communication that helped people get through the tragic events: Television and Telecom.

The news channels remained forever present and vigilant, and have to be lauded at continuously trying to bring up-to-date news to their viewers. Within Pakistan, many felt the loss of Geo News, and in its absence Aaj and ARY News became to channels of choice. While the actual honor of breaking the news of the bomb blast in Liaqat Bagh absolutely live be unofficially given to the newly launched Samaa News, unfortunately it was only the channel’s second day on satellite and it wasn’t available on cable at the time.

DAWN News, catering to a select niche of the population, won over quite a few fans, if only because of their ability to be sure of the news that they were giving out. The flip side, of course, is the fact that an impression continues to persist that DAWN News can not be relied on breaking news, but rather remains stronger on analysis and presenting varying view points. Cisco Adds Internet Streaming to Content Delivery System

November 11, 2007

Enables Providers to Deploy Next-Generation Video Entertainment Services
In May 2007, Cisco announced a significant enhancement to its Content Delivery System (CDS), adding Internet streaming media capabilities that allow service providers to offer an ever-expanding scope of online content to help meet their customers’ expectations of accessing any content, anywhere, anytime and on any device.

The enhanced Cisco CDS offers much more than other video-on-demand and streaming systems. The Cisco CDS Internet Streaming solution incorporates applications for delivering video to digital televisions and set-top boxes as well as delivering video, voice, music and data to a wide range of Internet Protocol (IP) devices such as personal computers, Wi-Fi-connected mobile phones and personal digital assistants.

“With the media expansion that Pakistan is experiencing, these are the services that media companies need to be planning now” says Dr Aamir Matin, General Manager, Cisco Systems in Pakistan. “With broadband and increasing accessibility points for people to access content, television channels have to be ready to match their delivery to the demand, which will always be on the rise.”

This solution is part of the Cisco Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN), an architecture based on international standards and industry best practice. The Cisco IP NGN is a converged network designed to deliver next-generation video, voice, data services while adding mobility to all services. The IP NGN design for video service delivery is a flexible platform for the delivery of a wide array of traditional and emerging video applications. The Cisco CDS uniquely delivers personalized services to both set-top boxes and IP devices; it empowers service providers to transform themselves into experience providers that can deliver “The Connected Life” to their customers.
